Ballack apologises and keeps captaincy

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

Michael Ballack will remain captain of Germany after apologising for his public criticism of coach Joachim Low.

“Joachim Low and Michael Ballack were able to establish a new basis of trust during their private meeting in Frankfurt on Thursday and Michael Ballack will therefore remain team captain,” the German FA (DFB) said in a statement on Friday.

The Chelsea midfielder flew to Frankfurt at the coach’s request to discuss comments made to a German newspaper about Low’s decision to drop team mate Torsten Frings for the last two World Cup qualifiers.

Ballack had already issued a public statement ahead of the meeting, saying he would apologise to Low.

“The precondition (for remaining captain) was he had apologised to Loew, allowing the conflict to be resolved,” the DFB added.

Ballack said in the DFB statement it “was not acceptable” for him to comment in public on Low’s decisions.

“He is the national coach, he makes the decisions and we all have to accept that,” said the midfielder.

“Following our discussion I do not have the slightest doubt the national team will achieve its aims within a good atmosphere.”

Low said it was important the talks took place openly.

“Michael Ballack remains my captain but he as captain must also stick to our rules,” Low said in the DFB statement.

“He knows he can discuss anything with me internally but that all sporting … decisions are ultimately made by our training staff and I have made that absolutely clear to Michael.

“I am delighted a fantastic player, who has played a major role in our past successes, will now continue to help us reach our goal of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.”

Ukraine unhappy with Poland’s Euro 2012 claim

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

Ukraine’s sports minister has demanded an explanation from his Polish counterpart over comments by the country’s new FA president suggesting Poland could stage Euro 2012 alone or in tandem with Germany.

Newly elected Polish Football Association (PZPN) president Grzegorz Lato said on Thursday that such a solution would be possible in the event that Ukraine was unable to co-host the tournament.

“I have officially demanded an explanation from my colleague, the Polish minister of sports, for the statements that were made,” Sports Minister Yuri Pavlenko told a news conference.

“Such comments should not be made. Poland and Ukraine are one team preparing for Euro 2012. Two states—one tournament.”

Both countries have been criticised by UEFA for the slow progress they are making in preparing for the tournament.

UEFA President Michel Platini warned in September that if the two countries did not speed up preparations they risked losing the tournament.

UEFA said on Friday it had no comment to make regarding Lato’s statement or the Ukrainian sports minister’s response.

Better news in Ukraine comes with the appointment of a new designer to rebuild Kiev’s Olympic stadium, due to host the final, after months of legal rows and wrangling over the original winner of the tender.

A second stadium is now in doubt in the western city of Lviv after an Austrian firm pulled out, saying it could not complete the venue within budget constraints set by local authorities.

A senior official within the Ukrainian agency overseeing preparations said that the global financial crisis had brought a halt to 80 percent of projects in hotel construction. He denied news reports on Thursday quoting him as saying that 80 percent of construction projects in all fields were on hold.

Beckham signs for Milan

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

Milan have confirmed that England midfielder David Beckham will join the club on loan from 7 January.

The 33-year-old’s representatives flew into Milan on Thursday for talks with the Italian club on Thursday and reached agreement on a deal that will see Beckham stay in Italy until March.

Beckham, who plays for US side LA Galaxy, wants to stay fit during the MLS close-season to maintain his place in Fabio Capello’s England set-up.

“Milan have made a good addition,” said Capello, who coached the Rossoneri from 1991-96 and 1997-98.

“At Madrid I left him out of the squad because he had signed a contract with Los Angeles but he continued to come on the field and train and I put him back in the team.

“He is a very serious lad, very sensible, a professional. People think he is a playboy off the field, it’s not true at all.”

Former England captain Beckham had been a target of Milan before, in January 2007, but opted instead to move to Los Angeles from Real Madrid.

Milan director Umberto Gandini told Sky Sports News: “Only David knows his future, but for sure he has a commitment to go back to the MLS and I think he will fulfil that.”

Earlier this week LA Galaxy announced they have postponed their December tour of Australia because of Beckham’s move to Italy.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena gave Beckham his blessing, despite the risk of returning to American with an injury or suffering fatigue later in the MLS season.

“I think when players don’t go 100% they get hurt, so I’m not going to give him any advice about pulling out of tackles,” said Arena.

“David’s a very experienced player and he understands when to go into challenges and when not to.

“Once in a while it doesn’t always work out that way but if he goes and can play and train in that environment against players of that quality, it can’t be at 50%.

“He needs to play at 100% and he needs to position himself to get on the field for first-team minutes.

“Players can get injured whether they are in training camp or playing games and there’s no method you can create that can prevent injury.”

liverpool vs tottenham

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

Roman Pavlyuchenko pounced on the stroke of full-time to lift Tottenham Hotspur off the foot of Barclays Premier League.

Liverpool took the lead with just two minutes on the clock through a magnificent finish by Dirk Kuyt that saw Heurelho Gomes exposed.

Jamie Carragher’s own goal appeared to have salvaged a point for Spurs but Harry Redknapp’s side had grander ideas.

With injury time approaching, Pavlyuchenko tucked home a Darren Bent pass to deny the Reds their return to the summit of the table and end the top flight’s last unbeaten record.

Liverpool allowed a flurry of chances to slip by, with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso missing the pick of them, until Carragher rose high in the 69th minute to nod into his own net.

They should have been out of sight before Carragher struck while Spurs displayed more of the fighting spirit which served them so well against Arsenal in midweek.

The victory rung up Redknapp’s seventh point in three matches since replacing Juande Ramos a week ago, a remarkable return given Spurs’ dismal position until his arrival.

opening goal

It was three points dropped for Liverpool, who had Robbie Keane to thank for setting up the opening goal.

Much of the pre-match build-up focussed on Keane’s first appearance against the club he left for £20.3m during the summer and the match had barely started when he made his presence felt.

The Republic of Ireland striker continued some slick build-up play by finding the unmarked Kuyt down the right – and the Dutchman found the net from a tight angle with a brilliant finish.

Keane’s celebrations, however, were muted out of respect for the club he led as skipper.

Spurs’ defensive woes continued with an inswinging Gerrard free-kick scrambled away by Gomes and moments later Bent nearly turned the ball into his own net.

Bent tried to make amends at the other end when he chased an astute looping ball by Tom Huddlestone but Pepe Reina raced off his line to clear the danger.

The sting had been taken out of Liverpool’s early onslaught as Spurs began to retain possession, but their opponents’ constant harrying in dreadful conditions made life difficult.

Vedran Corluka tried his luck from out wide on the left after being teed up by David Bentley but his effort sailed wide.

The Spurs defence was opened up in the 29th minute when Kuyt nodded the ball down to Gerrard, who expertly weaved his way into the penalty area – however, his shot lacked the quality of the approaching run.

keenly contested

A desperate pass from Alvaro Arbeloa gave possession back to Spurs and the home side were holding their own in a keenly contested midfield battle.

But a dangerous run by Albert Riera underlined the threat posed by Liverpool as the ball was worked to Keane, who saw his shot easily blocked by a small posse of white shirts.

Reina was presented with a far tougher challenge at the other end in the 41st minute when he pushed aside Luka Modric’s impressive effort from the edge of the area.

The ball slipped under the legs of Xabi Alonso’s legs, leaving Reina with little time to react, but the Spaniard’s reflexes were equal to the task.

Harry Redknapp brought on Pavlyuchenko at the interval and the second half was just moments old when the Russian dragged a shot wide.

Spurs were concerned when Kuyt charged towards the goal, with the ball popping up to Gerrard – whose shot was tipped onto the right corner of the woodwork by Gomes.

The England midfielder, spotting Gomes was stranded, then tried a looping shot from out wide but only found the top of the net.

Liverpool should have been out of sight as the match but the visitors equalised against the run of play when Carragher, under pressure from Ledley King, headed a corner into his own net.

And the majority of the White Hart Lane supporters were delighted when Pavlyuchenko tucked home Darren Bent’s pass to complete the comeback.

arsenal vs stoke

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal slipped to their third defeat of the season in fractious fashion at Stoke on Saturday.

The home side secured a surprise victory with goals in the 11th minute from Ricardo Fuller and Seyi Olofinjana in the 73rd. Both were the result of Rory Delap’s torpedo throw-ins. Gael Clichy’s long-range strike in injury time was simply too little too late.

Arsenal’s horrible afternoon was capped three minutes after the second Stoke strike when Robin van Persie was sent off for a challenge on keeper Thomas Sorensen. The Dutchman had only been on the pitch for 10 minutes after coming off the bench. The visitors also had Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott stretchered off in the second half. Incredibly they ended the game with just nine men on the pitch.

Arsenal did play well in patches but they failed to pack much of a punch all afternoon and, after Tottenham’s two-goal comeback on Wednesday, this is the last result they needed.

They must recover their Premier League form quickly because the gap between Wenger’s men and the leaders is growing.

The only upside of a dismal day is that Arsenal have ample time to regain the points lost at the Britainnia Stadium this afternoon.

Stoke’s strongarm reputation perhaps precipitated the four changes made by Wenger ahead of the game.

Certainly Samir Nasri, Walcott and Van Persie were players less atune to the scrapping required this afternoon than their replacements – Nicklas Bentdner, Abou Diaby and Alex Song. The final change of the afternoon was enforced. William Gallas hurt his hamstring against Spurs so Kolo Toure returned after missing the last three games.

It was a bitterly cold afternoon in the Potteries and, if you believe the British newspapers, Arsenal’s title chances were in danger of turning a similar temperature in the wake of Tottenham’s comeback in midweek.

However the opening stages suggested Wenger’s men had recovered well. They bossed the early minutes and penned Stoke back into their own half.

But they were to be undone by Stoke’s opening chance. The effectiveness of Delap’s throw-ins have become well-known in Premier League circles this season yet Arsenal were caught out in the 11th minute by the first one they had to handle.

The Irishman flung a flat, fast ball into the area and Fuller battled to get beyond Toure and nudge home a header at the far post.

It was real sucker-punch and it drew the confidence out of Arsenal for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile Stoke were ebullient. They had a willing workhorse up front in Fuller and Delap’s subsequent throw-ins always caused consternation.

However the closest they really came was in the 19th minute when Almunia’s weak punch fell to Delap and Clichy nodded his looping header off the line.

By the midway point of the half, Arsenal had regained much of their poise. Adebayor fired a low shot at Sorensen and Bendtner had a half-chance but failed to control the ball with his chest.

However Stoke now had the luxury of sitting back in defence of their lead. They were breaking when possible then trying to win free-kicks and throw-ins around the area.

Meanwhile, Arsenal were restricted to long shots. The nearest they came to troubling Sorensen was Adebayor’s shot from the left just before the whistle but it flew a few feet over the bar.

Wenger’s side were re-energised after the break. They tore at Stoke in the opening minutes but again failed to force a save from Sorensen.

On the hour Wenger made a change. He brought on Walcott, pulled Song in to centre half and moved Toure to right back.

It nearly brought an immediate dividend when the Ivorian met a Fabregas corner on the edge of the six-yard area. Unfortunately his volley flew a few feet over bar.

After that Wenger brought on Van Persie and switched to 4-3-3. However a Delap throw-in nearly brought a goal against the run of play. This time the ball was only half-cleared and Salif Diao’s low shot was fingertipped away by Almunia.

The Arsenal manager was forced into another change with 19 minutes left. Adebayor had needed lengthy treatment earlier in the half following a challenge from Ryan Shawcross. When he got another knock he had to go off and Carlos Vela came on.

Worse was to come. Stoke won a throw on the left, Delap did his thing and Olofinjana bundled the ball in the far post. It was a scrappy goal but it did not matter to the home fans.

And there was still worse to come after that. Sorensen delayed collecting a chest back from Andy Griffin and Van Persie challenged him strongly. Referee Styles saw enough show the Dutchman a straight red card.

Walcott was also stretchered off in the dying seconds, leaving them with just nine men on the pitch.

Incredibly they then scored. Clichy chose an odd time to register his first goal as a professional footballer. His low, long-range drive crept into the corner to give Arsenal a little hope.

But the whistle blew soon afterwards.

wenger: ‘At the end of the day Stoke deserved to win’

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008

On his side’s performance…
“It was a game where we had a lot of possession. The team we played defended very well and were well organised. We were not sharp enough to create the chances and conceded two goals on two throw-ins. They fought for every ball and they waited for their set-pieces. In the end Stoke won because we didn’t create enough chances to score.”

On preparing for Delap’s throw-ins…

“We had a plan to deal with the throw-ins; we had worked on it. I am not sure the first one was touched by anybody. They fly into the box and it is difficult with 20 people in there. That sort of thing is not our greatest strength. We were punished and I believe we were unlucky as well.”

On a traditional English match…

“People who love the traditional English game must be happy because they got what they like today. It was a traditional game with a lot of fight and commitment. At the end of the day Stoke deserved to win the game.”

On a tough schedule…
“I believe we tried very hard and I think Stoke are sharp at the moment and we looked jaded physically. At the moment we play a lot games and we suffer a little a bit because of that. It isn’t confidence but we gave a lot on Wednesday. We play again in midweek and that is why, in the repetition of games, if you don’t score first you suffer.”

On Van Persie’s dismissal…

“I think that the red card was very, very harsh. If you get [Andy] Griffin without a yellow card today and Robin with a red, then I have to review my rulebook. He shouldn’t have done it but I don’t think it was a red card.”

On an array of injuries…
“We have very bad injuries to Adebayor and Walcott, and there is Sagna. One or two have knocks as well. It is the kind of game we played today and when you are a little bit short on sharpness, you are less agile and get out of tackles less quickly.”

orang bodoh vs orang pinter

Posted by jamesisaacneutron on 2 November 2008
